October is Eczema Awareness Month
One thing I absolutely love about living in Michigan is experiencing all four seasons; and fall is my favorite! Unfortunately, my skin doesn’t share the same sentiment. Most recently, it has required much more of a commitment to moisturizing due to dryness and itching. Can you or your loved one relate? Many others can as well, especially those prone to eczema, the “itch that rashes." In fact, millions of Americans have some form of eczema.
October is ECZEMA awareness month. It’s certainly a month that no Detroiter can argue about being a tad brisk. When the temperature drops in Detroit, so does the skin’s moisture. And dry skin is more likely to itch and rash. Here are 3 easy tips to help protect the skin from becoming irritated due to this month's cooler temperature:
1. Avoid taking long hot showers
I know its tough...it feels great when its cold outside! But, warm water is less drying to the skin.
The longer the skin is exposed to water, the less moisture it maintains. Keep showers to 10 minutes tops.
2. Avoid using harsh soaps
Harsh soaps can be drying to the skin as well.
Nice gentle soaps include, but are not limited to, Aveeno®, CeraVe®, Cetaphil®, and Dove®.
3. Moisturize immediately after showering or bathing
It's also helpful to reapply your favorite moisturizer throughout the day.
